Coronavirus: Businesses unsure how – or if – they will be able to reopen after lockdown | UK News

Some business owners say they are unsure how or even if they will be able to reopen if social distancing has to be enforced when the lockdown is eventually eased.

Linzi Gill, who employs 20 people at Evolve Hairdressing on Bishopthorpe Road in York, thinks her salon would be unable to meet any social distancing requirements.

“I don’t see what we can put in place, or what the government can put in place, for us to be able to go back in and continue as normal,” she said.

A note to customers after Evolve salon in York was forced to close due to coronavirus

The award-winning Pig and Pastry cafe on the same high street is pondering its future, possibly as some sort of takeaway.

Owner Julia Holding is determined that the business she runs with her husband Steve will reopen, but thinks its narrow serving area and crowded, shared tables will no longer be acceptable to anxious customers.

“It’s going to be very different for a long period of time,” she predicted.

“We are already starting to think about how we can adapt, how we can change, to make sure we can run a business.”

In the window of Ms Gill’s salon a sign makes the promise: “We will come back from this stronger than ever.”

Its owner says she fervently hopes that will happen, but says in her darkest hours she asks herself: “Is there much point in going back?”

She admitted: “I never thought I’d say that.

“All the people who know me know that I’ve been absolutely dedicated to the salon and the team, but it’s just the unknown.”
